How to Create a Clean URL Slug from a Title

“10 Café Tips & Tricks!” cannot go into a URL as it is. The spaces, ampersand, accent and exclamation mark all cause trouble. A slug generator reduces the title to something safe and readable.

What the generator does

Using the Slug Generator, “10 Café Tips & Tricks!” becomes 10-cafe-tips-and-tricks. It lowercases everything, replaces the accented letter with a plain one, turns “&” into “and”, drops punctuation and joins words with a hyphen.

The options

  • Separator: hyphen or underscore. Use hyphens; search engines treat them as word separators.
  • Stop words: removes small words like “the”, “to” and “in”. “The Best Way to Learn Python in 2026” becomes best-way-learn-python-2026 instead of the full version.
  • Maximum length: 30, 50 or 75 characters, or none. Set to 30 the same title gives the-best-way-to-learn-python, cut at a word boundary.
  • Ampersand to “and”: keeps “&” from disappearing.

Several titles at once

Paste one title per line to generate a slug for each. It is handy for building a content list or a redirect map.

Good slug habits

  1. Keep it short and descriptive; a few key words beat the whole headline.
  2. Do not include dates unless the date is part of the topic.
  3. Avoid changing a slug after publishing. If you must, set up a redirect from the old address.
  4. Check for stop words that carry meaning before you strip them: “how to” can matter.

Frequently asked questions

Are capital letters allowed in a slug?

Technically yes, but web servers can treat upper and lowercase addresses as different pages, so lowercase avoids duplicate-content problems.

What about non-Latin scripts?

The tool converts accented Latin letters to plain ones, so “Größe und Übung” becomes grosse-und-ubung. Text in other scripts, such as Hindi, Russian or Japanese, is dropped completely: a title written only in those scripts produces an empty slug, and in a mixed title only the Latin words remain (“Hello नमस्ते World” gives hello-world). For those titles, write the slug by hand in Latin letters.
