Encode text for use in a URL, or decode percent-encoded text, with a choice between encoding a single value and a whole address. It runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose encode or decode.
  2. Choose component (for a value or a piece of a URL) or full (for a complete address).
  3. Paste your text and copy the result.

The difference

For https://example.com/a b?q=café&x=1:

  • Component: https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Fa%20b%3Fq%3Dcaf%C3%A9%26x%3D1
  • Full: https://example.com/a%20b?q=caf%C3%A9&x=1

Component mode also encodes : / ? & =, so it suits a query value or a URL placed inside another URL. Full mode keeps those characters, so a complete address still works as a link.

Good to know

Decoding caf%C3%A9%20au%20lait gives “café au lait”. A stray percent sign not followed by two hex digits is reported as invalid encoding. Do not encode twice, which turns %20 into %2520. A plus sign means a space only in form-style query strings.

See the guide, component vs full encoding and the glossary entry.

FAQs

Why is one accented letter several codes?

Each character becomes UTF-8 bytes, and every byte gets its own code. The letter é is two bytes, so it becomes %C3%A9.
