How to use it

  1. Type a number as a decimal (0.00045) or in e-notation (3.2e5).
  2. Read the decimal value and the scientific form.

Examples

  • 602,200,000,000,000,000,000,000 is 6.022 × 1023 (shown as 6.022e+23 for the decimal).
  • 0.00045 is 4.5 × 10−4.
  • 3.2e5 is 320,000, or 3.2 × 105.

Good to know

Standard form has a front number from 1 up to (but not including) 10, so 12 × 103 should be 1.2 × 104. The “e” in e-notation means “times ten to the power of” and is not Euler’s number. The tool only rewrites the number: it does not round it or judge how many significant figures your measurement supports. Engineering notation is not covered.

FAQs

Why does very large input show e+23?

Computers write very large decimals in e-notation. 6.022e+23 means 6.022 × 1023.

Does a negative exponent mean a negative number?

No. It means a small number: 10−4 is 0.0001.
