Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 back to text. It runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose encode or decode.
  2. Paste your text and convert.
  3. Copy or download the result.

Examples

  • “Hello” encodes to SGVsbG8=.
  • “Hello, 世界” encodes to SGVsbG8sIOS4lueVjA==, because text is converted as UTF-8 first.

Good to know

Base64 writes bytes as 64 printable characters, so the output is about a third longer than the input. The equals signs at the end are padding. When decoding, the input must be valid Base64 and must decode to valid UTF-8 text, otherwise the tool says it cannot. Decoding a binary file will not give readable text; for pictures use Image to Base64.

Base64 is not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords. See the Base64 guide and Base64 vs Base32.

FAQs

Why does my decoded text look garbled?

The original may be binary data, or text in an encoding other than UTF-8. This tool decodes to UTF-8 text only.

Can I paste Base64 that contains line breaks?

Try removing the line breaks first with the Remove Line Breaks tool if decoding fails.
