Estimate how long a download takes from the file size and your connection speed. It runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Enter the file size and choose KB, MB, GB or TB.
  2. Enter the connection speed and choose Kbps, Mbps or Gbps.
  3. Read the estimated time.

The calculation

File sizes are in bytes and speeds in bits, so multiply the size by 8 first. A 2 GB file is 16,000 megabits, and at 100 Mbps that takes 160 seconds, or 2 minutes 40 seconds. A 500 MB file at 50 Mbps takes 80 seconds.

Good to know

Sizes use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB), as most download pages do. The answer is a best case: real speeds drop with Wi-Fi, busy hours, server limits and other devices on the same connection, so allow extra time. Use your upload speed, not your download speed, when you are sending a file. A 100 Mbps line moves at most 12.5 MB per second.

FAQs

Why is my real download slower than the estimate?

The estimate assumes the full advertised speed for the whole transfer, which is rare.

Do both values have to be above zero?

Yes. The tool asks for a size and a speed greater than zero.
