How to use it

  1. Choose fraction to decimal, or decimal to fraction.
  2. Enter a numerator and denominator, or a plain decimal such as 0.75 or −3.5.
  3. Read the result.

Examples

  • 3/8 = 0.375
  • 1/3 = 0.33333333 (a repeating decimal, rounded)
  • 0.125 = 1/8
  • 0.35 = 7/20

Good to know

A fraction ends as a decimal only if its denominator, in lowest terms, has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. Others repeat forever, so the tool rounds them. The decimal field accepts plain decimals only: a percentage such as 50% is not accepted. A denominator of zero is rejected.

FAQs

Why is 1/3 not exact?

One third cannot be written exactly as a decimal. Keep it as a fraction when exactness matters.

How do I convert a mixed number?

Convert the fractional part and add the whole number: 2 3/4 is 2 + 0.75 = 2.75.
