Encode the characters that break HTML into entities, or decode numeric and basic entities back to plain text. It runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose encode or decode.
  2. Paste your text.
  3. Copy the result.

What it converts

Encoding replaces five characters: & becomes &amp;, < becomes &lt;, > becomes &gt;, a double quote becomes &quot; and a single quote becomes &#39;. The input <a href="x">Tom & Jerry's</a> becomes &lt;a href=&quot;x&quot;&gt;Tom &amp; Jerry&#39;s&lt;/a&gt;.

Decoding reverses those five and also converts numeric entities, so &#169; becomes the copyright sign.

Good to know

Other named entities, such as &copy; and &nbsp;, are left as they are, because the tool does not carry a table of names. Decoding goes one level only: &amp;amp; becomes &amp;. Pages served as UTF-8 do not need entities for accents or symbols. Encoding is a basic safeguard, not complete security; use your template system’s escaping on real sites.

FAQs

Why did &amp;amp; appear in my text?

The text was encoded twice. Decode it once, then encode only the plain version.
