The favicon is the small icon in browser tabs, bookmarks and search results. It is tiny, so it rewards simple shapes.
What the generator makes
The Favicon Generator builds a real .ico file with four sizes inside it: 16, 32, 48 and 64 pixels. Browsers choose the one they need. It accepts JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF images up to 25 MB, and works in your browser.
Using it
- Choose a square image, ideally at least 256 pixels wide.
- Download the favicon.ico file.
- Upload it to the root of your site, so it is available at
/favicon.ico. - Optionally link it in your page head:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">.
Design tips
- Use a simple, bold symbol rather than a detailed logo. At 16 pixels, fine lines vanish.
- Pick high contrast against both light and dark browser themes.
- Start from a square image; a wide logo will be squashed or need padding.
Beyond the ICO
Modern sites often also provide PNG icons at 48, 96 and 192 pixels, an SVG, and a 180 pixel Apple touch icon. Google asks for a favicon whose size is a multiple of 48 pixels for search results, so a 48 pixel or larger PNG is a good addition. Browsers cache favicons for a long time, so changes can take days to appear; adding a version number to the link address helps.

Do I still need an ICO file?
It is the safest fallback, because browsers and crawlers still request /favicon.ico by default.
