Turn an image into a multi-size favicon.ico containing 16, 32, 48 and 64 pixel versions. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose a square JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF image (up to 25 MB), ideally at least 256 pixels wide.
  2. Download the favicon.ico.
  3. Upload it to the root of your site so it is available at /favicon.ico, and link it in your page head if you like.

Design tips

  • Use a simple, bold symbol; fine detail disappears at 16 pixels.
  • Pick colours with high contrast on both light and dark browser themes.
  • Start from a square image so the icon is not squashed.

Good to know

An ICO holds several sizes in one file, and browsers choose the one they need. Many sites also add PNG icons at 48, 96 and 192 pixels, an SVG and a 180 pixel Apple touch icon. Google asks for a favicon whose size is a multiple of 48 pixels in search results, so add a 48 pixel or larger PNG. Browsers and search engines cache favicons for a long time, so a change can take days to show; adding a version number to the icon link helps.

FAQs

Do I still need an ICO file?

Yes, as a fallback. Browsers and crawlers still request /favicon.ico by default.
