How to use it

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Choose a tip percentage: 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25.
  3. Enter the number of people sharing.
  4. Read the tip, the total and the amount per person.

Formula and example

Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100, total = bill + tip, and per person = total ÷ people. A $84.50 bill at 20% is a tip of $16.90, a total of $101.40 and $25.35 each for four people.

Good to know

The tool applies the percentage to whatever amount you enter, so decide whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount and enter that. It splits the total equally; if one person ordered more, work out the food shares by hand first. A service charge on the bill is set by the venue and may not go to staff. Tipping customs vary widely: in some countries it is expected, small or not done at all. This is a convenience calculator, not financial advice.

FAQs

How do I round the split?

Round each share up and treat the extra as part of the tip. For $101.40 over four people, $25.35 each becomes $26.
