How to use it

  1. Enter the size.
  2. Pick the unit you have and the unit you want.
  3. Read the result.

Decimal or binary?

Decimal units count in thousands: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Binary units count in 1,024s: 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Drive makers use decimal and many operating systems report binary but label it “GB”, which is why a 512 GB drive shows about 477 GiB.

  • 1 GB = 0.9313 GiB.
  • 512 GB = 0.512 TB.
  • 1 TiB = 1,099.51 GB.

Good to know

The gap between the two systems grows with size: about 2.4% at kilobytes, 7.4% at gigabytes and 10% at terabytes. Compare like with like. This tool converts storage sizes; connection speeds are in bits, which is a different matter, covered in megabits vs megabytes.

FAQs

Which one is correct?

Both are, under their own definitions. The confusion comes from decimal amounts being shown with binary values under the same label.

Why is my downloaded file a different size from what the site said?

The site may have used decimal units while your computer shows binary ones, or the reverse. Convert both to bytes to compare.
